Article Headlines

  • India’s state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at DefExpo 2020 with a Bengaluru-based startup to develop Unmanned systems, Swarm technologies, and more
  • Newspace Research & Technologies Limited (NRT) and BEL will co-operate in the design, development, manufacturing, integration, testing and supply of Unmanned Systems, Swarm technologies, stratospheric platforms and related payloads, and to provide lifetime support to the Indian Defense forces and non-defense customers, the companies said in a joint statement.
  • The MoU will enable BEL to make joint efforts with NRT to seize opportunities in the Unmanned Systems market and related domains in both the Indian as well as global markets

Overview & Comments

  • Aside from BEL, in October 2019 it was revealed that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is developing a swarm enabled drone system dubbed “Alpha-S”
  • The Alpha-S swarming drones will be between 1-2 meters long and designed to be air-launched from panniers carried aboard fighter jets
  • The drones, according to the press release, will be fully networked with each other through electronic datalinks. Using their infrared and electro-optical sensors, they detect targets such as surface-to-air missile units, enemy radars and aircraft on the ground
  • Each drone is designed to be smart enough to ‘learn’ about what it detects before targets are assigned to individual drones
  • India joins a variety of countries with various swarm programs – See “Swarm demo for DARPA’s OFFSET program” and “UK Swarm unit delayed”
