Article Headlines

  • India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Dynamatics Technologies Limited (DTL), and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build IAI’s drones for the Indian military
  • While IAI will be responsible of designing the drone, HAL will be the principal contractor and DTL, the Principle Sub-Contractor
  • HAL is currently involved in the depot level maintenance of all the MALE and smaller classes of UAVs supplied by IAI to the Indian Defence Forces since 2004

Overview & Comments

  • India is the main market for IAI’s UAS segment
  • For over two decades IAI’s UAV systems are operating in most branches of the Indian military
  • Those systems mainly include the Searcher MK II, Heron 1 and the Harpy / Harop loitering munitions
  • IAI sees India as a leading potential customer for its Heron TP and even pitched an MTCR category 2 compatible version of the system a few years back
  • However, the system is up against the MQ-9B as 22 UAVs were cleared for sale by the US government in 2018, but recent reports suggest that about half of those might be purchased, if at all
  • In June 2019 the company unveiled the T-Heron (Tactical Heron) with an MTOW of 600 kg, which might suit as a replacement for India’s aging Searcher MK II
  • Currently the Heron MK II was unveiled as it too is regarded as highly potential replacement / upgrade to the existing Heron 1 platforms – See “New IAI Heron Version Unveiled”
